this morning we ate breakfast at the hotel and then continued on from kaohsiung to 墾丁 (kenting) at the southernmost tip of taiwan. i’d never been anywhere lower than taichung until this trip, so this is all very exciting to me. we drove through kenting national park, and i enjoyed seeing the beautiful ocean. the western side of taiwan is flatter and the east side is very hilly, so after lunch we started driving into the hilly east side on our way to 台東 (taitung) where we’re staying right now, at the formosan naruwan. it’s a huge, resort-style hotel, but we haven’t done much here. i took some dramamine at lunch, but i still got really motion sick on our way here, and i still haven’t recovered yet. we got here, and a bit after we had to go get dinner, but i wasn’t feeling very well so i didn’t eat much. then we came back to the hotel room and i knocked out for a few hours til now, but my stomach still feels funny. i hope i feel better tomorrow. this trip has not been that great for me, health-wise!

anyway, today was mostly sitting in the bus and then getting to this resort, but here are some pics we took, mostly from kenting.

the tour guide showed us maoyan (“cat rock”) and i don’t think it looks much like a cat at all.. but oh well. here it is in the distance.

on our drive in the south, our tour guide showed us this rock, which is the “nixon rock.” taiwanese people don’t like nixon because he betrayed taiwan and went to china, so this rock apparently looks like him drowning in the ocean.

this was taken at the south part of taiwan, the part that makes taiwan look like a sweet potato.
